A few year ago, Vir Sanghvi, the then Editor of the Hindustan Times in his column had lamented over the plight of illegal Bangaladeshi migrants by citing the case of his Bangladeshi maid in his Mumbai residence. If such a narrow and personal considerations will decide the national issue of illegal immigration of a large number of people to eat into our already scare means of livelihhod, one can well imagine the deplorable situation in which the policy makers and opinion makers reel in this country.

This problem is not a new one. The Indo-Bangladeshi border, running into more than 800 kms., is a porous one. And the illegal immigration continues in Coochbehar and Balurghat districts of West Bengal in connivance with the corrupt armed forces, manning the border, obliging politicians and the needy population in search of a cheap maid.

Days are not far when we will cry like Italians and other European countries who turned a nelson eye towards the illegal immigration of Muslim population from Morocco and other African countries because the civilised European population wanted domestic helps and that too at a lower price but in the wake of clashes between civilisations in the post 9/11 days these European countries are crying from rooftops about the turning of Europe into Eurabia.

anil,
I remember a similar article by one so called journalist Nitin Gokhale who was shedding tears for the ”poor” immigrants and trying to justify it on human and economic (sigh!) grounds with some lame excuses. Certain portions of the national media is strangely sympathetic towards the illegal immigrants.
I replied opposing his views but it was not published. And these guys talk about ”freedom of speech”!
